Description
Under the Skilled Nursing facility Prospective Payment System (SNF PPS), a case-mix adjusted payment for varying numbers of days of SNF care is made using one of the 44 Resource Utilization Groups, Version III (RUG-III). On claims to Medicare and other Payers, these RUG-IIIs are represented as the first three positions of HIPPS codes. HIPPS codes are determined based on assessments made using the Minimum Data Set (MDS). The RUG-III code, which must be combined with the Assessment Indicator to create the HIPPS code. The HIPPS code is then entered on the claim. Medicare does not issue regular updates, so the product is updated as needed.
